Carson, CA - After two hours and three sets, fourth seed Lindsay Davenport
fell to Australian’s Samantha Stosur in the second round of the JP
Morgan Classic 6-7(4),6-4, 6-3. This is Davenport’s
first tournament back after suffering from a back
injury. “ My body felt drained as the match went on; I
tried getting serves over 100mphs,” Davenport made it
clear that having three and a half weeks of break isn’t
enough time to recuperate. Stosur will face Jelena Jankovic.

After a few days rest
and winning the Acura Classic in San Diego last week, Maria
Sharapova demonstrated that not having a lot of rest doesn’t always
have an affect on playing ability. Sharapova cruised through fellow
Russian Anastassia Rodionova in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the second
round of the JP Morgan Chase Open tournament. After struggling for a
few games and getting used to the playing surface, Sharapova took
control of the match without a problem. “She(Rodionova) swung
freely, so flat…she ripped her forehand like its her last one ever,”
said Sharapova. After breezing through the second round she faces
Marion Bartoli of France. |
